BEACHSTONE MOSAICS
The abundant supply of raw material used in Nusantara Beachstone Mosaics is harvested by hand from over 1,500 kilometers of beach on ten separate Indonesian islands. The amount of beach stone available for harvest is enormous. Glaciers, frequent land slides and constant tectonic activity has for millions of years created a continuous, renewable supply of beach stone. Rainfall erodes and tumbles the raw stone down steep rivers and streams from mountains to sea shore, where waves finish the shaping and smoothing. Like a large natural conveyer belt, this process maintains the ongoing supply chain. As long as there are mountains and rainfall in Indonesia, there will be a reliable supply of beach stones. The beachstone harvest is highly regulated and strictly enforced to insure a long term reliable supply.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Traditional marble, granite, limestone and onyx quarry processes used in most stone tile and mosaics is very damaging to wildlife and surrounding environments. Where as the hand harvesting of beach stone occurs above the high tide line and has little or no impact on wildlife. Within days and in some weather conditions, hours after harvest, wave action turns over new stone and returns the harvest site to its original condition.
The production and manufacturing of Nusantara Beachstone Mosaics is very energy efficient. No heat, power tools or heavy machinery is used in the production. An energy audit of the manufacturing process revealed that the highest use of energy is the daily hot meal served to employees.
No VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are used in the manufacturing process. All adhesives used to fix the stones to the mesh backing are very low in toxic emissions. The workplace is pleasant and comfortable with fans and prevailing winds keeping the air in the workplace fresh.
